Many women are unsure what to expect from their first women’s health physiotherapy appointment. At Secret Women’s Business (SWB) Physiotherapy, we want you to feel informed, comfortable, and confident about the process.
Unlike a standard physiotherapy session, your initial appointment at Secret Women’s Business Physiotherapy is a full one-hour consultation. This allows your physiotherapist to complete a detailed assessment, giving you the time and space to share your story and for us to fully understand your concerns.
A Comprehensive History
Your physiotherapist begins by taking a comprehensive history, exploring areas that influence pelvic health and function. This may include your gynaecological history, pregnancies and births, menstrual and hormonal factors, and any symptoms related to your bladder, bowel, or pelvic pain.
We dedicate this time because these systems are deeply connected. Bladder and bowel habits, childbirth, and hormonal changes can all influence the strength, coordination, and comfort of the pelvis and pelvic floor. Understanding these relationships helps us tailor your treatment plan precisely to you.
Physical Assessment
Depending on how much history there is to cover, your physiotherapist may also perform a physical assessment during your first session. This may include observation of posture, assessment of the abdominal wall, lumbar spine, and pelvis, and sometimes a vaginal examination to assess pelvic floor muscle strength, control, and coordination, or to identify areas of tenderness or pelvic organ descent (prolapse). It will depend on the main reason for your appointment as to what physical assessment may be required.
Any pelvic floor or vaginal assessment is always discussed beforehand, and you are supported to make an informed choice about whether you wish to proceed. Your comfort and consent are our priority at every stage.
What Makes Secret Women’s Business Physiotherapy Different
Our physiotherapists are specifically trained in all areas of pelvic health. Their qualifications go beyond standard physiotherapy training, focusing on the complex interactions between the bladder, bowel, pelvic organs, prolapse, pelvic pain, pregnancy, postnatal care and the musculoskeletal system. Every physiotherapist at SWB dedicates their working hours, training, and professional development exclusively to this specialised area of physiotherapy.
Many patients are surprised by how much education they receive in their first session (not just about pelvic floor exercises!) but about how the body works and how simple strategies can significantly improve pelvic health.
Leave Empowered
Our goal is for every woman to leave her appointment feeling informed, understood, and empowered, with practical steps she can start implementing straight away.
If you’ve been referred to Secret Women’s Business Physiotherapy, you’ll be welcomed into a supportive environment where your story matters and your privacy is always respected.
