When you see a Secret Women’s Business (SWB) Physiotherapist for prolapse, you can expect a comprehensive and specialised evaluation and treatment plan.
Here’s what you can anticipate during your first visit (allow 1 hour):
Initial Appointment
History and Pelvic Health
The SWB physiotherapist will take a detailed assessment of your medical history, including any previous surgeries, pregnancies, childbirth experiences, and your current symptoms related to prolapse and pessary use. Your SWB physiotherapist will discuss your bladder and bowel health, current exercise habits and discuss other lifestyle factors such as the physical demands associated with your job.
Symptoms
Physical Examination
Pelvic Exam
Your SWB physiotherapist may perform a pelvic examination to assess the severity of your prolapse and the condition of your pelvic floor muscles.
Muscle Assessment
Individualised Treatment Plan
Education
Your SWB physiotherapist will educate you about your condition, the anatomy of the pelvic floor, and factors contributing to your prolapse. They will also educate you on healthy bladder and bowel habits and discuss strategies to manage incontinence or bowel dysfunction, if present.
Pelvic Floor Exercises
You will receive guidance on specific pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) tailored to your needs to help strengthen and support your pelvic floor.
Biofeedback
Sometimes the SWB therapists use biofeedback devices to help you learn how to contract and relax your pelvic floor muscles effectively.
Lifestyle Modifications
You will receive advice on lifestyle changes that can help manage and prevent further prolapse, such as proper lifting techniques and dietary considerations.
Pessary
It is rare that pessaries are fitted at your initial consultation, as often it is important to address other lifestyle and pelvic health concerns first. Some women will require medication to assist in preparing the vaginal tissues prior to fitting. At your initial appointment, your physiotherapist may begin to discuss whether a pessary could assist your prolapse.
If you think you may require a pessary we recommend you book with Physio Jenny, Amy or Natasha.
Follow-up Appointments
Depending on the severity of your condition and your progress, you will have follow-up appointments to monitor your improvement and make adjustments to your treatment plan if necessary.
Your SWB physiotherapist will work with you to achieve your specific goals, which might include reducing prolapse symptoms, improving pelvic floor function and pessary fitting and ongoing management (offering guidance on insertion, removal and maintenance.) The SWB physiotherapists have advanced training in an extensive range of styles and sizes of pessaries.
